I doubt this happened, but hear me out-- Kathy was seeking a divorce. We know she had spoken to a divorce attorney. We also know keeping the family's reputation and money together was incredibly important to Douglas and Seymour.
What if Douglas killed Kathy to keep her from divorcing Robert and taking family money? We know Robert was cheating on her, and had been violent. She had a good case.
This would explain Robert going to Douglas's house planning to kill him, and his feeling that Douglas took "everything" from him.
Susan Berman was "onto something big" when she was murdered, and had always maintained Robert's innocence. What if she knew Douglas killed Kathy and was planning to blackmail him? Out of family loyalty, Robert needed to maintain the family's secret as he had for years.

I think that Douglas and seymore were at the least knowledgable about Kathy's murder. Perhaps they discussed with Robert in advance that she needed to go. Robert is so twisted that he probably committed the murder himself though.
