The commentary is very interesting, to say the least. He stated multiple times that a particular scene was “just about right” or “pretty much how it happened.” Here are some highlights of some of what he states in the commentary:
He first heard about the movie via a google alert about a store in Connecticut which was going to be used in filming. His store in Middlebury was much like the one in the movie but messier. It had barrels of nuts, beans, and wheat everywhere. Seymour did visit the store.
Childhood: His mom was super tall and dark-skinned with dark hair and her name had been Bernice Herstein (sp). His mother and his father had very little in common. She loved parties and entertaining and he was a loner who didn’t like to go out. He feels his father played a major role in his mother’s suicide because his father didn’t come home much and when he did come home it wasn’t for long. His mother had terrible asthma problems and the effects of the medication messed her up. She tried not to take the medication but when she had to, it made her hyper and mentally unhinged.
Their house was in Elviron New Jersey, was 3 stories high and eventually burned down. They had a collie named Charley.
About Kathie: He met her through a friend who had spoken to someone in the Durst organization about finding an apartment for Kathie when she moved to N.Y. from Long Island to be a dental hygienist. At some point this friend brought her to a party to meet Bobby Durst. He says they were in love “I mean really in love” and that they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. They loved it in Vermont and they were both hippies. They were married in Bedford, NY in a little grove and after the ceremony they went to Nino’s for lunch. There was a priest and a rabbi at the wedding and Mrs. McCormack paid for it all, including the lunch. They moved to a great apartment overlooking Riverside Drive. Igor loved it there. At some point they moved to South Salem and at periods of time, Kathie would go to South Salem without Bob. Kathie went to college in Danbury, CT at WestConn. She applied to several medical schools and was accepted to Albert Einstein, but Durst thinks it was because his grandfather was one of the founders. He says Seymour called Jack Wyler (sp) to get her in. He never told that to Kathie. In the spring of 1980, Kathie hired a lawyer and Bob discovered a cancelled check to the lawyer so he hired one himself. His lawyer advised him not to divorce her in the last few months of medical school so neither filed for divorce, despite the fights. Towards the end they were both seeing other people.
About Himself: Durst says he has always been very shy and would much rather have someone introduce him to another person than for him to have to walk up and introduce himself. He doesn’t get along well with others (I’ll say!). He says he discovered pot in LA in the 60’s and was always stoned and has loved it ever since. He was always late to everything and he didn’t care.
About Seymour: Seymour was hard on Bob and leaned on him to go into the family business. He (Seymour) felt Bob didn’t want to out of spite because Bob ultimately blamed Seymour for his mother’s death. Bob says he did feel it was his father’s fault and that Seymour was having an affair. Back in the 60’s, Seymour believed the money was to be had west of 6th Avenue, that everything east had already been purchased and developed. He bought large swaths of property west of 6th Avenue with the intent of making residential developments but the market crashed and Seymour lost his butt. Bob felt he was being pulled in separate directions between Seymour and Kathie. He felt he owed it to his father to go into the family business and he didn’t want his father to think he was spiteful towards him.
About Susan Berman: Suzie used to stay at one of the Durst’s properties on 51st Street when she came to New York to write. Their relationship was always platonic and they both wanted it that way. Suzie was much more sophisticated than Kathie, was more of a business person.
Miscellaneous: Bob says he regrets the way he treated Kathie’s family. Her family had never met anyone like Bob before; he had piles of money and horrible manners and they just wanted Bob to like them. Kathie had several siblings who had spouses and kids and every get together was a large gang and Bob hated it. Bob would talk about sex at the dinner table and do whatever he could do to be disgusting.
Bob says he should have realized Kathie was going to want kids one day. She was from a large family and of course she was going to want a family too. He should have let her have a kid. He said maybe he would have liked it, although he would have been a terrible father. He said Kathie would have been a good mother.
Bob went through Primal Therapy at some point. Apparently you yell and scream about your mother (or at least that is what he yelled about) but it didn’t help, although lying on a couch and screaming is relaxing (he says.)
